Boy killed in pedestrian accident in New York

Unfortunately, on the busy streets of New York, accidents involving pedestrians are relatively common. According to the NYPD, just fewer than 180 pedestrians were killed in city traffic in 2013. More than 20 pedestrians already have been killed in traffic accidents this year.

Accidents involving children are particularly tragic. One young boy was recently killed in a pedestrian accident while walking with his mother. Witnesses said the boy dashed away from his mother and ran out into the street from between two parked cars. The five-year-old boy was hit by a van whose driver was backing up. The van driver left the scene, but came back after circling the block and frantically apologized to the boy's mother once she realized that she had hit him.

Witnesses put the boy on the hood of a parked car and tried to keep him awake until paramedics arrived. Sadly, their efforts were in vain. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he passed away shortly thereafter.

The 23-year-old van driver has been charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. She is also facing three counts of traffic device violation: red light. When a family loses a loved one in a car accident, they may be able to file a wrongful death suit. If the driver is found to have been negligent and if her negligence caused the death, the driver may be held liable for damages.

Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City, recently launched the Vision Zero plan to cut down on these types of tragedies. The initiative will set lower speed limits and redesign streets. With this new initiative, pedestrians will be safer on the streets.
