New York pedestrian accident numbers are staggering

Staten Island residents have no doubt heard or read about the alarming number of motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents in New York. As this blog pointed out recently, lawmakers have tried to address the problem by creating new speed limits in New York City. However, speed limits can only do so much to prevent these accidents.

According to statistics kept by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 16,432 motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents in 2013, the latest year for which the statistics are available. Of these accidents, 343 were fatal, almost always to the pedestrian. In fact, because some accidents involved more than one pedestrian, the number of pedestrians killed was 344, higher than the number of fatal accidents. The number of pedestrians suffering non-fatal injuries was at a shocking 16,278.

Of course, even a non-fatal injury can be severe in a car-pedestrian accident. Pedestrians hit by a car can be left with paralysis, brain injuries and other types of injuries that can require long-term treatment or permanent disability. These injuries forever change the lives of the injured and their families.

When a pedestrian is injured in an auto-pedestrian accident caused by a driver's negligence, the injured may be compensated for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages through a personal injury lawsuit. In the case of a fatal accident, the victim's family may pursue lost wages and other damages through a wrongful death lawsuit.

New speed limits and other measures can be very important in preventing these accidents. It's also important that the injured and their families get the compensation they need and deserve after a pedestrian accident. New York attorneys with experience in this type of case can help the injured and their families to understand their options.
