Study says cell phones linked to over 25 percent of car accidents

New Yorkers love their cell phones, and some residents might admit to using their phones in inappropriate situations such as behind the wheel. Over the past few years, driving while using a cell phone has become a major cause of car accidents all across America. Cell phones lead to inattentive driving, which in turn, leads to devastating car accidents. A recent study by the National Safety Council shows the dangers of cell phone use behind the wheel. The non-profit group found that cell phone usage is under-reported in federal crash data and they wanted to give people a better understanding of the effects of driving while distracted. The study found that over 20 percent of all road wrecks can be attributed to the use of a cell phone. Cell phones require attention and cause many to become distracted drivers. In fact, cell phone usage was found to be responsible for approximately 1.2 million crashes out of a total of 5.7 million in 2013. Even just talking on the phone can make a driver four times more likely to be involved in a crash. The report also puts texting and driving in its own separate category. Two studies were used to determine how many accidents were texting related. One study found that texting behind the wheel makes it eight times more likely to be involved in an accident, whereas the other study found it 23 times more likely.

After combining the results of both studies, researchers found that texting and driving is responsible for 6 to 16 percent of accidents, making the actual total percentage of cell phone related crashes in the United States 27 to 37 percent. Studies like these will hopefully help prevent some of the tragic Staten Island accidents local residents hear about every day.
