Construction accidents on the rise in New York

When a person is out and about in Staten Island, property owners have a duty to ensure that their structures cause no harm to passersby. Construction companies and businesses also have a responsibility to protect the public from dangerous property conditions. However, 2015 is turning into a dangerous year when it comes to construction accidents.

So far this year in New York, eight people have died in construction accidents. This is relatively high compared to 2014, when eight people perished over the course of the whole year. From 2013 to 2014, the number of accidents increased 24 percent.

One recent accident occurred when a 12-ton heating and air conditioning unit fell 30 stories from a crane, injuring ten people. Fortunately, none of the injuries were serious. When it comes to falling objects, construction workers are at risk as well as the people on the streets below. According to the president of the Building Trades Employers' Association, construction is second only to mining when it comes to the most dangerous jobs in America. Many of these accidents are preventable with the proper safeguards, the right tools and qualified workers.

The reason for this increase corresponds with the general rise in construction, according to some experts. When there are more construction jobs, it may be harder to find qualified workers to handle the tasks at hand. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has called for more construction in order to increase affordable housing and improve economic development. According to the mayor's budget for next fiscal year, the Buildings Department is up to $148 million.

With this increase in construction, city officials are trying to find a way to protect the people of New York.
