New York Governor implements safety measures to prevent wrecks

On behalf of Michael J. Gaffney, Attorney at Law | May 21, 2014 | Car Accidents

Accidents on the streets of New York City have become a serious issue that affects the lives of many. Governor Andrew Cuomo has been deeply concerned with the number of tragic car accidents that have taken so many innocent lives. Recently, one accident in particular captured nationwide attention. A group of high school students was riding in a car in Long Island when their vehicle crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle. Several of the teenagers were killed. Police believe that speeding, racing, drinking and texting may have played a role in the tragic collision.

The Governor has since decided to take action to protect those on New York roads. The state has already installed two speed control trailers along the street where the accident occurred to make sure motorists are aware of how fast they’re going and help them adhere to the speed limits. A new radar technology will also be put into place. This technology will use traffic signals to help stop speeding motorists. When the radar device detects a speeding driver, it will be able to change the traffic signal to red. This will force the speeding driver to stop, thereby reducing the potential for an accident. The state is also considering lane modifications as a way to slow down drivers. .

Governor Cuomo’s Traffic Safety Committee is working with local police departments and traffic boards to come up with new ways to help prevent road tragedies from occurring. While these efforts are admirable, they do nothing for those already harmed in an accident.

When an accident occurs, courts have to determine who was at fault. Drivers who were speeding, texting and driving, driving under the influence, or driving recklessly could be found negligent and held liable for accident damages. A New York personal injury attorney can help crash victims bring a claim against a negligent driver in hopes of recovering the compensation he or she needs to reach a robust physical, financial and emotional recovery.
