New York ranks 28th on list of worst drivers in U.S.

On behalf of Michael J. Gaffney, Attorney at Law | Dec 2, 2015 | Car Accidents

When you think of which states have the most dangerous drivers, our readers would probably think that New York is near the top of the list. However, that isn’t the case. A recent study released by CarInsuranceComparison.com ranked all the states from worst to best in terms of the driver safety. Drivers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut ranked amongst the safer states. New York in particular came in at number 28 out of 51 (the study includes Washington D.C.). The statistics show that the most dangerous drivers reside in Montana, while the safest drivers are in Minnesota.

Researchers considered a variety of factors to determine which states had the safest drivers. Some of these factors include drunk driving, speeding, failure to obey traffic laws and overall fatality rates on the roadways. New York was fortunately near the bottom of the worst driver list with regards to fatality rate, failure to obey traffic laws and speeding. However, there are still many areas for New York to work on. The state came in 15th for road fatalities caused by drunk driving. In fact, over 30 percent of the nearly 1,200 fatalities involved drivers with a blood alcohol level above .08, the nationwide legal limit.

New York also came in 15th for car accident fatalities caused by careless driving, which includes both pedestrian and bicyclist deaths. The statistics show that for every 100,000 people in the state, 1.9 fatalities occurred as a result of careless driving.

Regardless of how safe or unsafe New York drivers are, the fact remains that many people are injured and killed every year on Staten Island roadways because of negligent drivers. If you or a family member has been affected by such an accident, filing a lawsuit against responsible parties is one way to attempt to hold someone liable and recover damages for your tragedy.
