Off-duty officer crashes into pedestrians in New York City

Each year, thousands of pedestrians are killed in motor vehicle accidents all across the country. Drunk drivers are responsible for a number of these accidents. A recent Brooklyn pedestrian knockdown involving an off-duty NYPD officer left one pedestrian dead and three injured.

The officer lost control of his SUV and drove off the road into a group of pedestrians walking on the nearby sidewalk. Witnesses reported seeing the officer's SUV swerve just before the accident occurred. Investigators found that it is likely that the cop was speeding before his vehicle jumped onto the sidewalk.

A 21-year-old pedestrian passed away at the hospital after the accident, while the three other victims are being treated in the hospital for their severe injuries.

The second year cop was under the influence at the time of the accident and was arrested at the scene. Bystanders managed to keep him in the vehicle to prevent him from escaping before police arrived. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test and denied being behind the wheel, before asking to speak with his union representative.

He is now facing multiple charges including driving while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and three counts of assault. He posted $300,000 bond and was released a few days ago after the judge suspended his license. He has also been suspended from the NYPD.

Drunk driving accidents can lead to serious injuries and fatalities, as well as legal consequences for those responsible. Injured accident victims and the families of those who have passed away may be able to file lawsuits to hold drunk drivers liable for their negligence.
