The dangers of a speeding driver

On behalf of Michael J. Gaffney, Attorney at Law | Mar 13, 2017 | Car Accidents

If you were to list some of the most common dangers present on America’s roads and highways, you would likely include certain prevalent issues such as distracted driving or drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol. While these are serious issues that compromise the safety of every motorist, speeding remains one of most common safety threats.

Speeding, like texting while driving, is a completely preventable and entirely inexcusable action. Staten Island drivers who cause harm to others because they were participating in this type of reckless and negligent behavior could face both criminal and civil penalties.

Why is speeding so dangerous?

There is a misconception that speeding allows a driver to arrive at his or her destination more quickly. In reality, it likely only saves a minuscule amount of time, but exponentially increases the chances of an accident. The risks associated with speeding include:

  • Increased chances that the driver will lose control of the vehicle
  • Decreased effectiveness of safety gear, such as seatbelts
  • Increased stopping distances
  • Increased severity of damages if involved in a crash

Speeding is a form of aggressive behavior, often fueled by situations such as bad traffic or running late, but in reality, it is also a complete disregard for others and the law. Statistics indicate that speeding played a role in as many as one-third of all accidents over the course of two decades and may be a contributing factor in a significant percentage of all fatal crashes.

The rights of motor vehicle accident victims

If you were hurt or your loved one was killed as the result of a speeding driver, you know how frustrating it can be to move forward while trying to deal with the complicated aftermath of a serious accident. In some situations, it may be appropriate to move forward with a civil claim against the driver. By taking this step, you may be able to recover losses associated with the following:

  • Medical bills
  • Vehicle damage
  • Funeral expenses
  • Lost wages from missed work
  • Lost financial support of the deceased
  • Rehabilitation and therapy costs
  • Emotional duress and psychological trauma

You have the right to a full and fair recovery after a speed-related motor vehicle accident. Through physical evidence from the scene and more, an experienced personal injury attorney can build a strong civil claim on your behalf, advocating for the recovery you deserve. If speed played a role in your accident, you may find it beneficial to fully explore your options for legal recourse.
