Woman, two children critically injured in pedestrian accident

The roads in Staten Island can be exceedingly dangerous for pedestrians even when they are following all the safety rules when crossing the street. A pedestrian accident can cause a substantial amount of damage to those who have been hit. This is due to myriad factors including the lack of protection pedestrians have and the speed at which vehicles are often moving. Injuries and fatalities are not unusual in pedestrian accidents and these can cause financial, emotional and personal problems for an extended period. Those who have been affected by one of these accidents must understand how a legal filing can help them in its aftermath.

A woman and two children were hospitalized after all three were hit by a turning vehicle as they crossed the street in the intersection. The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. The 25-year-old woman was crossing with two 4-year-old girls. The vehicle, a Hyundai SUV, was being driven by a 56-year-old woman. It turned at the corner and hit the woman and the two children. The children were brought to the hospital in critical condition, but were later upgraded to stable. The woman walking with them had injuries that were reported as minor. The woman driving the SUV remained at the scene and was placed under arrest for failing to yield to pedestrians.

With a pedestrian accident, the aftereffects can be substantial. Being hit by a car can cause broken bones, internal injuries, cuts, bruises, brain trauma and spinal cord damage. This is especially true when it involves children. Immediately after the accident, the long-term problems that can arise might not be the first thing that victims and their families think about. Getting well is the initial priority. However, costs, rehabilitation, the possibility that there will be a need of round-the-clock care and other factors will be unavoidable. To cover these expenses, it is unwise to expect insurance to be the saving grace. A legal filing is not just a victim’s right, but it could be a necessity.

In this crash, the danger of intersection accidents is clearly exhibited. Since it was two children and an adult who were injured, the injuries can go beyond the physical and extend to the psychological as well. The children will need medical care and to be monitored to make certain they are able to cope with what happened. Considering all the issues that could come about after the children were hit by a car, their family should discuss a case with an experienced attorney as soon as possible.
