Speeding vehicles on Staten Island and throughout New York City do not discriminate in a crash. This is especially true in pedestrian accidents as the person hit has no protection from injury. This can happen to anyone at any time and cause severe injuries and death. And, a legal case is crucial to getting compensation for their injuries, damages and lost wages.
A pedestrian accident involving a detective for the New York City Police Department sent the officer, 50, to the hospital with head trauma and other injuries. The accident occurred at shortly before 9 p.m. The detective was working in plainclothes. She was crossing the street with her partner at the time of the accident. Witnesses stated that the vehicle was driving at excessive speed when it hit the detective. She was flipped in the air and hit the pavement. The officers were in the area investigating a stabbing at a local establishment. The 31-year-old driver stayed at the scene. No charges have been filed yet. The detective is expected to survive.
When there is an accident between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian, the injuries can be substantial. Because the person is not accorded the protection of being in a vehicle, there can be broken bones, lacerations, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and more. This can lead to long-term damage and the inability to work. It often causes fatality. There will be medical costs, the potential need for round the clock care and other problems. If it happened on the job, there will be the need to get workers' compensation and other payments for the injuries.
This accident is the second pedestrian accident involving a person working for the NYPD in recent weeks. The other injured a trainee while this one injured a veteran detective. Car accident injuries can prevent a person from being able to do his or her job, especially if the job involves mental acuity and physical ability. With a pedestrian accident, those who were hurt must keep the future in mind. The variety of issues that can come about after the accident are extensive and a lawsuit to be compensated should be considered to cover all the costs. A lawyer who is experienced in helping those who were pedestrians and were hit by a car is vital to a case.
