The leader of the study conducted at the University of Maryland says that more and more people are realizing the risks involved with drowsy driving. The study had four focus groups with undergraduate students. They took part in a survey about driving behaviors like driving under the influence and using a smartphone behind the wheel. In general, they viewed themselves as safe drivers. However, they stated that drowsy driving was not a major legal violation since there is no testing for it and it was hard to tell how drowsy is too drowsy to drive.
