Your body hurts, and your heart is racing. You have just been involved in a collision caused by a negligent driver, and it feels as though you are trapped in a nightmare. Unfortunately, the accident is far from a figment of your imagination.

Writing down details about what took place in the car collision may be the furthest thing from your mind immediately after the crash. However, in reality, it may be the most personally beneficial move you can make following a wreck. Here are some tips for taking good notes after you have been in a motor vehicle collision in New York.

Takes notes about the accident itself

Once you have established that you are safe, it may behoove you to grab a pen and paper and start writing down every detail you can recall about the wreck. For instance, you can think of the accident as a play during a basketball game and view yourself as the commentator explaining what happened during each second of the play.

Your goal is to create a detailed, comprehensive story of the accident that another person who was not involved in the incident can visualize and understand. Including fundamental details, the accident date and time, the involved parties, and any witnesses to the accident may all ultimately be helpful. Other details that might be worthwhile to include are the weather conditions during the accident as well as conversations that occurred after, during or before the collision happened. Photos of the accident scene may help to further corroborate your account of events.

Write down notes about your injuries

If the accident caused you to suffer injuries, writing down details about how you feel may be expedient as well. For instance, are your injuries keeping you from being able to sleep, or do you feel depressed as a result of the injuries? Also, has the accident left you feeling uncomfortable and anxious? Even if pain in your neck seems minor, for example, taking notes about this pain may be a wise move. After all, this pain may be a sign of bigger issues down the road.

Any doctors’ notes you can collect from your medical visits might also be handy to include with your own notes. If you decide to file a personal injury claim against the negligent motorist who caused the unfortunate collision, all of the notes you have collected may be helpful for proving your case. A successfully fought claim might lead to a monetary damage award that could significantly help you to address your medical costs and other accident-related losses.
