New car crash statistics show conflicting results

For New Yorkers, the road can be a dangerous place. This is true whether one is as a driver, a motorcyclist, a bicyclist or a pedestrian. Research is constantly conducted to determine the statistics of auto accidents and to find ways to reduce their frequency. In some cases, there might be improvements in one area, but other areas might see a worsening number. The statistics for 2017 are being analyzed and are showing interesting results. Those who are in an accident should be cognizant of these numbers if they suffer serious injuries or lose a loved one in a wrongful death incident and would like to seek compensation.

In New York City, there was a 7 percent reduction in traffic fatalities. The number of pedestrians who were killed declined from 148 to 101. However, there was an increase in the deaths of people who were driving, riding a bicycle or were operating a motorcycle. This is from a report released by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Mayor de Blasio had instituted “Vision Zero” four years ago. This was an attempt to prevent all traffic fatalities. Since its implementation, there has been a decrease in these incidents of 28 percent for traffic deaths and of 45 percent for pedestrian deaths.

Tactics to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities include reducing speed limits, changing street configurations, closing areas to traffic and increasing the enforcement of traffic laws. The Mayor is seeking to add more strategies, including raising fines for camera violations and suspending the registrations of vehicles that speed in school zones or go through red signals.

Despite the clear success these new strategies have had in reducing the number of auto accidents that cause serious injuries and wrongful death, it is unrealistic to think that there will be zero accidents, as the ambitious name of the program implies. Those who are unfortunate enough to be involved in car accidents whether they are in a vehicle, are on a motorcycle, are bicycling or are pedestrians must remember they will face medical costs, lost wages, potential long-term damage and even death. Some people in these situations will wish to pursue a lawsuit to recover sufficient compensation to cover for all that was lost. A lawyer who is experienced in accident investigations and helping victims is critical to a case.
