Number of pedestrian accidents near New York schools problematic

On behalf of Michael J. Gaffney, Attorney at Law | May 9, 2018 | Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents are a constant risk for people as they cross the busy New York City streets. This is a part of life in the city, and it often stems from drivers who are reckless, negligent, intoxicated or for many other reasons. People can suffer serious injuries when they are pedestrians and are hit by a motor vehicle. Some of the most vulnerable of these victims are children, and a new study shows that there are a troubling number of crashes outside New York City schools. When there are pedestrian accidents, the long-term problems should be considered when thinking about a possible legal filing.

The study, done by Localize.city, states that there were 84 accidents with pedestrians and bicyclists within 500 feet of one school in Greenwich Village over the last five years. This website accrues data to give neighborhood profiles. Many teens have anecdotal evidence of accidents between cars, pedestrians and bicyclists. On 14th Street and Fifth and Sixth avenues, the numbers indicate that this area ranks ninth and 10th as being in the top 10 most dangerous areas for intersection accidents.

Another school on West 22nd Street had 62 accidents between vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists within 500 feet of it from 2013 to 2017. This is near the area that is ranked third most dangerous in the city. A school in the Bronx had 67 accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. This is close to the intersection ranked as the fifth most dangerous. Certain intersections close to schools have quadruple the average accident numbers. Strategies to improve safety include attempts to focus on the need for being more careful and an increase in the number of speed cameras that are stationed throughout the city.

When there is a vehicle-pedestrian accident, the vulnerability of pedestrians makes it likely that there will be serious injuries and the need for significant medical care. This is especially dangerous when the accident involves children. As this research shows, the number of accidents near schools in New York is a problem. People who have been hurt or lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident may want to determine if they are able to seek compensation to recover for the losses they suffered.
