Alleged drunk driver kills pedestrian in Staten Island crash

Regardless of how cautious Staten Island residents are when they are driving or are pedestrians, accidents will still happen. There can be many reasons for this including recklessness on the part of other drivers, distracted driving behaviors, negligence and drunk drivers. When the crash involves a pedestrian, their vulnerability can lead to catastrophic injuries and wrongful death. People who have suffered injuries or lost a loved one in a auto-pedestrian accident should be aware of the importance of accident investigations and they should consider their options following the crash.

A 32-year-old man who was crossing the street in the early-morning hours on Father's Day was hit and killed by an apparent drunk driver. The accident happened at around 4:40 a.m. He was crossing the road when a grey Nissan Altima hit him. After he was hit, he flew onto the windshield of a parked vehicle. Emergency personnel could only remove him after taking the roof off the parked vehicle. He was declared dead at the scene, not far from his residence.

After the accident, the driver tried to flee. A relative of the victim pursued him and, along with others, stopped the vehicle. The driver was a 25-year-old man. The victim was a father of two biological children, ages 17 and 8, and had two stepchildren, ages 14 and 6. The driver of the Nissan was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.

Those who have lost a loved one in a fatal pedestrian crash will need to come to grips with numerous issues. It is not easy to get beyond an unexpected and unnecessary car crash especially when it happens on a day that is meant to be celebratory and the apparent cause was a drunk driver. The lost companionship, lost contributions to the family personally and financially, and other factors large and small will take time to overcome. While a wrongful death legal filing will not bring the person back, it can provide some semblance of closure by helping financially.
