Bus-pedestrian accident kills woman as she crosses street

On behalf of Michael J. Gaffney, Attorney at Law | Sep 12, 2018 | Pedestrian Accidents

New Yorkers are keenly aware of the dangers they face when crossing the streets in such a big and busy city. Taking the necessary precautions, such as walking in the crosswalk and making certain to wait for lights to change, or to have the right of way, are all key points to remember. Since there are so many large vehicles and dangerous drivers around the city, it is imperative to remain vigilant. One thing that New Yorkers will often take for granted is that drivers who take to the roads professionally – specifically New York City bus drivers – will be risk averse and cautious. Unfortunately, that is not always the case and fatal pedestrian accidents can happen.

According to a recent report, a bus crashed into an 81-year-old woman in Brooklyn, killing her. According to the investigation, the 62-year-old bus driver was turning, did not yield to the pedestrian and hit her as she crossed. The MTA driver is now confronted with charges because of the failure to yield and failing to exercise due care. According to the union representative for the driver, he is an experienced bus driver and has a good record. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

When crossing the street or moving around the city, pedestrians are relatively defenseless when there is a vehicle heading toward them. Since they have no protection, a pedestrian can face long-term damage and even death. Brain trauma, spinal cord injuries, broken bones and more can result when a person is hit by a car or bus. If it is a larger vehicle, like a bus, there is a serious chance that the person will be killed. The person who survives a pedestrian accident might have long-term injuries and be unable to contribute to his or her family. In fact, that person might need 24/7 care. When there is a death, the family will be forced to accept the unnecessary accident and move on without their loved one. A legal filing cannot turn back time, but it could help a family move forward.

As the investigation into this recent bus crash continues, the woman’s family will likely attempt to make sure they are protected by contacting a law firm that is experienced in pursuing cases after a pedestrian accident.
