Pedestrian accident with sanitation truck leads to man’s death

Anyone who has been out and about in New York will understand that trash collection vehicles are large, sometimes travel at high rates of speed and will frequently have drivers whose focus is getting their work done as quickly as possible and will ignore basic road rules and courtesies to do that. This will inevitably lead to an auto accident. These are dangerous in any situation, but when there are pedestrian accidents, it can cause serious injuries and fatalities.

In a recent incident, a pedestrian, 37, died after he was hit by a New York City sanitation vehicle. The accident happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. The accident appears to have happened because the driver of the sanitation vehicle drove against traffic on a one-way street. The pedestrian was hit while in the crosswalk and the truck ran over him. He was dragged. The driver continued and then stopped after turning the corner. The trash collection vehicle remained at the scene.

When law enforcement arrived, the truck had been turned around to look as if it was heading in the right direction for the street. The investigation revealed that not to have been the case. There is surveillance video of the accident. The 33-year-old driver was charged with failing to yield for a pedestrian, going the wrong way down a one-way street and not exercising due care. He was suspended by the sanitation department.

Drivers are responsible for keeping a close eye on pedestrians and obeying the law. Because pedestrians are so vulnerable to injuries and potentially fatalities in pedestrian accidents, there are laws in place to protect them. Unfortunately, many drivers do not adhere to those laws. This is particularly irksome when the accident involves a vehicle working for the city and the driver of that vehicle compounds the accident by trying to cover it up. Fortunately, there is evidence as to what happened in this recent incident. The family of the man who died will need to understand their rights to compensation after this pedestrian accident.
