Stats for motor vehicle accidents show rise in truck fatalities

New Yorkers are accustomed to navigating the busy roads of the city. They will be cautious and prepared for what the bustling city roads have in store. This creates danger. Research into the number of fatal auto accidents shows that large truck fatalities are on the rise.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released the latest information regarding fatal traffic accidents. It stated that there were positive indicators that safety is getting better from 2016 to 2017. There was a reduction in fatalities for those in passenger vehicles, vans, light pickups, motorcycles and bicycles. Pedestrian safety also improved for the first time in five years. The number of alcohol-related wrecks lowered by 5.6 percent. In other areas, however, there are worrisome issues.

With large straight trucks, there was a glaring increase in fatalities in 2017, at 18.7 percent. Fatalities in tractor-trailer auto accidents rose by just under 6 percent. And, there were 3 percent more fatalities in SUV accidents. It is believed that a part of the rise in these fatal accidents is the greater number of trucks on the road. With the economy strong, there are more trucks taking to the road, making it likely that there will be an increase in accidents.

Notably for New Yorkers, a greater number of fatalities with all vehicles happened in urban areas. In 2015 and before that year, there were more fatal accidents rurally. In the last 10 years, urban areas saw a 17.4 percent rise in fatal accidents. Rural fatalities reduced by 18 percent.
