Man arrested after pedestrian death in Staten Island hit-and-run

In Staten Island, it is important for drivers to pay strict attention to pedestrians. This is especially true when there are elderly people and children on the street. Because drivers might speed, behave recklessly, drive while distracted and make other risky maneuvers, pedestrian knockdowns can happen. In a worst-case scenario, these can become fatal pedestrian accidents. To make the situation even more problematic, many drivers will flee the scene after a crash. Hit-and-run accidents will inevitably lead to criminal charges. Law enforcement is vigilant in finding drivers who have fled after a pedestrian accident, so it is imperative that those who have been hurt or lost a loved one have legal help immediately.

A 74-year-old man was arrested for the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian when he brought his vehicle to a repair shop. The driver allegedly hit an 89-year-old woman as she was crossing the street at the intersection in the evening at around 10:30 p.m. She had just exited a bus after leaving church for Easter mass. Her two sisters were accompanying her. She was taken to the hospital where she was declared dead. A description of the vehicle - a minivan - was circulated as was as a security camera video. It was found when the driver took it to be repaired. The man was arrested and faces multiple charges.

Injuries and death are common with motor vehicle vs. pedestrian accidents. Since pedestrians are naturally vulnerable, there are a seemingly endless number of problems that can come about after a crash. Broken bones, brain trauma, back injuries and more can occur. If the impact is severe enough, it can lead to a fatality. While anyone hit by a car will be in jeopardy of fatal injuries, older people are particularly at risk. When there is a pedestrian accident, a legal filing will not bring that person back, but it can help to cover some of the costs and provide compensation for pain and suffering.

A woman who was heading home from church was hit by a minivan that subsequently fled. Law enforcement eventually got lucky in that the driver of the vehicle sought to repair it and was caught. The woman's family must consider their rights in this case and contact a law firm that is experienced in filing personal injury and wrongful death cases after a pedestrian accident.
