Distracted driving causes unsafe roadways for motorists

Drivers that are distracted are putting attentive and responsible motorists in danger daily. Being distracted for even a fraction of a second is enough of an opportunity to cause accidents that can result in injuries and death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9% of car crashes that resulted in a death and 15% of car crashes that resulted in injuries were caused by a distracted driver in 2019.

3 categories of distractions affect driving ability

Being distracted while driving can come in a myriad of ways. However, according to the Center for Disease Control, the ways of being distracted can be classified into three general categories:

  • Visual: Any activity that causes a driver to take their eyes off the road is considered a visual distraction.
  • Manual distraction: Anything that causes a driver to take a hand off the wheel is considered a manual distraction.
  • Cognitive distractions: Anything that takes one’s mind off the task of driving is called a cognitive distraction.

The problem of distracted driving is an issue for all drivers to address because it affects everyone on the road. We can all work together to create safer roads by understanding the dangers of distracted driving and putting safety first when driving.

And yet, many drivers still don’t seem to grasp how dangerous it can be to do anything other than drive when they’re behind the wheel–even something as simple as reading text messages and emails on your phone can take your attention off the road for five seconds. At 30 miles per hour, it is enough time to cover the length of a football field without looking. It’s an epidemic that needs to be stopped before more lives are lost.

If one is hurt or killed due to a distracted driver, it can be beneficial to have professional guidance that is experienced in motor vehicle accidents in New York.
