As the weather gets warmer and more people take to the open road on their motorcycles, it’s essential to brush up on motorcycle safety. Whether you’re a new rider or have been riding for years, it’s crucial to take steps to stay safe on the road.

By being a defensive rider and properly maintaining your bike, you can help keep yourself safe while enjoying the freedom of the open road.

Motorcycle safety is important

New York continues to improve motorcycle safety through an affordable rider safety program, helmet laws, and making May “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles recommends that all riders take a Motorcycle Rider Course to learn riding techniques that will keep them safe. The state also requires operators to have a motorcycle license (Class M or MJ).

Here are some other tips to keep yourself safe while riding:

  • Wear DOT-approved helmets to protect your head in the event of an accident.
  • You want other motorists to see you, so wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Do not drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Maintain your bike and ensure it has working headlights, brakes, and horns.
  • Maintain a safe speed and obey all traffic laws
  • Always let motorists know your intentions with stopping and turning.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch for potential hazards on the road.

But, even if you take all the necessary precautions, accidents happen. If you are in a motorcycle accident, it is important to stay calm and take the appropriate steps to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Remember to never move an injured person unless they are in danger, call for help, and exchange information with the other drivers involved.

If you’re the victim of a motorcycle accident or your loved one was injured, make sure you find out more about your legal options to recover fair compensation for your losses.
